Bella, a teenage girl, recounts her hard and harsh experiences during the 1990's civil war in Burundi [Central-East Africa] that resulted in her being forced by her loving mother to stay with a relative in Congo [former Zaire]. But Congo too will eventually collapse soon, and Bella is once again on the run for her life, this time at a foreign land and in charge of her younger siblings. Starvation and exhaustion torture the lonely kids. A well-of family friend met abroad refuses the vulnerable 'orphans' a ride to safety in her boat. Only miracles from heaven will save the lives of the penniless children while canoeing toward Tanzania. A new round of different difficulties follow the siblings even at 'the land peace.' Having sent her brothers to Burundi as requested by her mother, Bella -along with her younger sister Zawadi- finds sanctuary at a refugee camp, and meets her betrayer face to face.

the writing can be a little difficult at times, but as a native english peaker with dear friends from Burundi it always warms my heart to hear the speech patterns. it was a good book to help me understand a little better where my friends are coming from, which was the reason i purchased it.Product details
